Who Are You Trying to Become?

There is a particular kind of shopping that is not really about the object. It is about the person we imagine we might become once we own it.

First, we shop for the identity

We decide we want to become a runner, so we buy the shoes, the vest, the watch, and the clothes. We want to become a mahjong person, so we start comparing tile sets, racks, mats, and very charming little bags. We want to become craftier, so an entire cart of supplies appears before we have made a single thing.

The same thing happens with reading, gardening, baking, hiking, and nearly every other life we can picture ourselves living. Sometimes buying the things associated with an identity gives us a small, immediate taste of already being that person.

This is not an argument against beautiful things. We love beautiful things. A good set of tiles can make a table feel special. A perfect notebook can make an ordinary Tuesday feel full of possibility. The objects are not the problem.

What if the first step were a place?

Most brands can sell you something that symbolizes the person you want to become. Latte & Leisure wants to help give you opportunities to actually become her.

Not through a dramatic reinvention. Not through a punishing routine, a morning checklist, or a new personality assembled in a shopping cart. Just through a real place to go and something interesting to try.

Make the distance smaller

There can be a surprisingly large distance between “I wish I were someone who…” and “I actually do this.” Usually, the bridge is not more research. It is one low-pressure invitation.

I wish I knew how to play mahjong. Come to a beginner table. We have what you need.

I wish I had a bookish group of friends. Come to a silent-ish reading meetup, even if you come alone.

I wish I were craftier. Take one workshop before buying an entire craft room.

I wish I had more things to do. Try something.

I wish I had more friends. Put yourself in rooms where the same people might start becoming familiar.

See what is coming up

You are not a project

This is not hustle culture wearing a cute hobby apron. You do not need to become more impressive, more productive, more interesting, or more anything.

Curiosity is enough. Leisure is enough. Wanting to see what happens when you sit down at the table is enough.

The goal is not to collect identities as efficiently as possible. It is to give yourself permission to play with one. You might become a regular. You might discover that mahjong is not for you but pottery is. You might go once, enjoy yourself, and never make it part of your personality. All of those outcomes count.

Become someone with plans on a random Tuesday

Some future selves are not built around a skill at all. Maybe you are trying to become someone who knows her neighbors. Someone who can walk into an event alone. Someone who has a creative hobby, a favorite local place, or a few familiar faces to say hello to.

Community often starts less dramatically than we imagine. It can look like choosing the same reading meetup next month. Sitting near the person you met last time. Recognizing the host. Knowing where to park. Familiarity gathers quietly, one ordinary outing at a time.

The things can come later

If you try the thing and love it, wonderful. Buy the tiles. Find the excellent hiking socks. Build the craft room slowly. Let the things support a life you are already enjoying instead of asking them to create it for you.

There is a different kind of pleasure in buying something after you know how it fits into your actual days. The object becomes part of a practice, not a promise you have to keep.

Give that version of you somewhere to go

You do not have to reinvent yourself. You do not have to announce a new era or order the complete starter kit.

You can simply notice the version of you that you are curious about, then make one small plan on their behalf. Pick a table. Choose a workshop. Save a date. Walk through the door.

That is what Latte & Leisure is here to make easier: less distance between wishing and doing, with room for leisure, play, connection, and changing your mind.
